SOUTHERN BRAZIL

We have made a brief sally into the south of Brazil, starting in Florianopolis.

This part of the country is very different from the north. It is sub-tropical both in climate and character. Many of the colonists are of German, Italian or Polish descent - there was even an influx of the land-owning class from the southern states of USA after they lost the Civil War and their lifestyle changed for ever!

There is large-scale farming and plenty of industry, especially leather goods and ceramic ware. After the Sao Paulo - Rio complex it is the most prosperous area of the country. The people are more efficient and generally very unlike the relaxed Bahianos among whom we have been recently.

We had been recommended to try Florianopolis, a modern city on the little island of Sta Catarina. It has a lot to offer on the cultural side, with universities, an excellent choir and orchestra etc - we went to a very professional performance of Beethoven's 9th. Unfortunately the city is not attractive to live in – lots of tower blocks, the pretty bits of the island all built over, etc, so we baled out after two days. The weather did not help - grey, damp and cold...

We headed north to Joinville, a German colony with very little to say for itself, a bit like Temuco without the new housing estates! We stayed long enough to have lunch...

From there we went on to Curitiba, a big modern city and capital of the state of Paraná. Again we had a recommendation but it is not for us – too big. Here too there is a great cultural side: we went to a concert of mainly baroque choral music, woven into a dramatic presentation of the life of an Italian playright of the same period, Carlo Goldoni. Very original and very high quality. But the city is a mini New York, this is not what we are looking for in Brazil...

The one enjoyable adventure was on the Sierra Verde railway line down to Curitiba’s port at Paranaguá – a fantastic trip.
Curitiba is at some 900 m above sea level and is proud of its Brazilian monkey-puzzles (araucaria angustifolia), which used to cover the highlands in dense forests. Needless to say, most of them have been felled. We felt quite at home!

The line descends through a preserved forest park, the composition of which changes with the altitude. The araucarias soon disappear and other trees take over, with lots of bromeliads. Not knowing much about the flora I cannot give you much detail, but tell-tale species were tree-ferns (Xaxim – dicksonia sellowiana)
at middle altitudes, and bananas when we got down towards the coastal plain.



The views were fantastic...







We left the train at the pretty colonial village of Morretes and went on to Paranaguá itself.

The town has an air of genteel decay and is something of a backwater. Clearly little of the money generated by the port ends up here. Anyone with any social asperation lives in Curitiba and commutes down to work if necessary. And as Paranaguá has no beach, no-one holidays here either. It was all rather sad.

Fuimos a dar una breve vuelta por el sur de Brazil.

Esta parte del país es muy distinta del norte, siendo sub-tropical en su clima y su carácter. Muchos de los habitantes son de descendencia alemana, italiana o polaca - hasta llegaron emigrantes de los estados sureños de los EEUU cuando habían perdido la Guerra Civil, y con ella su estilo de vida antiguo!

Aquí hay agricultura a gran escala y mucha industria. Es la zona del país más prospera, después de Sao Paulo - Río. La gente es más eficiente y en general muy distinta de los Bahianos relajados que conocimos en el norte.

Nos habían recomendado Florianopolis, una ciudad moderna en la isla de Sta Catarina. Tiene mucho que ofrecer en términos culturales, con universidades, un excelente coro y orquesta etc - fuimos a una rendición muy profesional de la novena de Beethoven. Lamentablemente la ciudad no es atractiva como para vivir – muchos edificios, y las partes bonitas de la isla construidas, etc, así que nos arrancamos depués de dos días. El clima también desagradable - gris, frío, húmedo...

Fuimos a Joinville, una colonia alemana un poco más al norte, poco interesante - como Temuco sin el barrio inglés o el Jumbo! Almorzamos y nos fuimos...

De Joinville fuimos a Curitiba, ciudad moderna y capital del estado de Paraná. También nos habían recomendado probar esta ciudad, pero no es para nosotros – muy grande. También tiene mucha actividad cultural: fuimos a un excelente concierto de música coral baroca, integrada a una representación dramática de escenas de la vida de un italiano, autor de obras de teatro del mismo período, Carlo Goldoni. Muy original y de alta calidad. Pero la ciudad es una Nueva York en miniatura, no es lo que estamos buscando en Brazil...

La única aventura que disfrutamos era de bajar a Paranaguá, el puerto de Curitiba, en el tren "Sierra Verde" – fantástico. Curitiba está a unos 900 m sobre nivel de mar y están orgullosos de sus araucarias brasileras (araucaria angustifolia), que antiguamente cubrían el altiplano al oeste de Curitiba en bosques densos. POr supuesto, la mayoría fue cortado a principios del siglo 20. Nos sentimos como en casa!

La línea baja por un parque de bosque preservado, las plantas van cambiando con la altitud. Las araucarias desaparecen luego y hay muchas otras especies - tengo que estudiar! A alturas medianas reconocí unos helechos-arbol, y en el llano costal - bananas!

Dejamos el tren en el bonito pueblito colonial de Morretes y siguimos hasta Paranaguá.

La ciudad tiene una atmósfera de decadencia educada - como perdida en el tiempo. Está claro que muy poco del dinero generado por el puerto termina aquí... Todos los que tengan cualquier pretensión social viven en Curitiba y bajan al puerto para trabajar si fuera necesario. Y ya que Paranaguá no tiene playa, nadie viene ni para pasar las vacaciones. Era todo un poco triste.
