We are due to leave Temuco on Thursday - heading South! Our last chance to take the train to Pto Montt, which we have always wanted to do since it reopened (if it is running, which seems to be in doubt!). And we can start to get acclimatized to travel by train! Most of our personal effects are in storage and we are living in a friend's house - he is in Santiago this month. Lots of farewells and offers to carry our bags! Our passports are in the Chinese embassy and we have our invitation letters for Kazakhstan, but are applying for the visa through the embassy in Toronto as there is no Kazakh embassy or consulate in South America. Russia is next on the list.
A quick rundown of our plan for those who will be surprised to see this... The long term aim is a move to live in Brazil for a few years, we don't know where, but a smallish city on the coast with a decent level of culture, social life, university etc. We will see what reality brings. To get to Brazil from Chile we are going the long way round the world! From Santiago we go to visit friends in Puerto Rico, then Toronto and Seattle. Across the Pacific to Beijing for a week and then we board the Trans-Siberian express (actually the Trans-Manchurian for the first leg) which will take us to Ulan Ude, Irkutsk and Novosibirsk (get the map out). From there we duck south into Kazakhstan to spend a week with an old friend from University who is there with the British Council. Then back to Russia, maybe a trip on a boat down the Volga, and a cultural tour of Moscow, St Pb and western Russia. Two months for that section! Then via Prague and Switzerland to England for a few weeks to recover and see friands and family. On 1st Sept we arrive in Brazil (Recife in the NE) and have three months available to explore the country and find somewhere we like, getting back to Chile on 1st December. Fingers crossed as from now, as we still have to get our Russian and Kazakh visas - we may end up going by a completely different route! So watch this space...
Vamos a salir de Temuco el Jueves - rumbo al Sur! Es nuestra última oportunidad de tomar el tren a Pto Montt, que siempre quisimos hacer desde que reanudaron el servicio (si es que esté funcionando - existe una duda!). Así nos empezamos a aclimatar a los viajes en tren! la mayoría de nuestros efectos personales ya están en bodega, estamos viviendo donde un amigo, quién está actualmente en Santiago. Muchas despedidas, y varios ofertas de los que quieren acompañarnos como porteros! Nuestros pasaportes están en la embajada de China, tenemos las invitaciones para Kazaxstan pero vamos a sacar la visa en toronto, ya que no hay ninguna embajada ni consulado en toda sud américa... La próxima visa es la de Rusia...
Un resúmen rápido de nuestros planes para los que se sorprenden con este mensaje... Nuestra intención a largo plazo es de ir a vivir algunos años en Brasil , no sabemos donde, pero buscaremos una ciudad más bien pequeña, en la costa, con buen nivel de cultura, vida social, una universidad etc. Veremos lo que se encuentre en la realidad... Para llegar a Brasil desde Chile vamos a dar la vuelta al mundo - al revés! De Santiago vamos a Puerto Rico para ver a unos amigos, después a Toronto y Seattle. Cruzaremos el Pácifico a Beijing para una semana, y de allá subimos al Tren Trans-Siberiano (en realidad el Trans-Manchuriano para la primera pata) viajando por Ulan Ude, Irkutsk y Novosibirsk (búscalos en el mapa). Vamos a bajar a Kazaxstan para estar una semana con un amigo mío de la Universidad, quién trabaja allá en el British Council. Después de eso, volvemos a Rusia, talvéz hacemos un viaje en barco por el Volga, terminando con un 'tour' cultural de Moscú, St Pb y Rusia occidental. Toda la parte Rusia en dos meses! Después viajamos vía Praga y Suiza a Inglaterra para recuperar(!) y ver a la familia y los amigos. El 1 de Sept llegamos a Brasil (Recife en el NE) y tenemos tres meses para explorar el país y buscar un lugar que nos guste, volviendo a Chile el 1 de Diciembre. Tenemos los dedos cruzados desde ya: nos faltan todavía las visas para Rusia y Kazaxstan - es posible que terminemos con una ruta totalmente distinta! Así que podrán viajar con nosotros en este blog...
